What Matters
One message that was and still is constantly on repeat, is the need for "more". The belief that we should never settle and that we should always want more. That if we slow down, we are lazy.
We buy our dream car, only to spend most of the time in rush hour waiting for traffic.
We buy homes we are barely in because we are always working.
We try to make more and more money, only to realize that we cannot take our money with us when we die.
We try to impress people we don't even like by showing them how well off we are.
The biggest takeaway from the COVID-19 crisis for me is gaining even more clarity on what really matters and for me, it is none of those things. It may be for you, and that is fine, just make sure it is for the right reasons.
Here is what really matters to me.
People, while sometimes I can get annoyed with people in general, this time has taught me how important they really are. It is amazing how much you realize you appreciate someone when you cannot be near them. The time you do have connecting with them virtually is amazing.
Time outside, there were days that were nicer and February and fewer people were outside than now. There were too many other things to do than spend time outside. We had malls to go to, movies to watch and places to be. We had no time to enjoy the outdoors.
Valuing people, if no more than ever we realize who the real heroes are in the world. The people that we should really be looking up to. It's not the celebrities and athletes, it's the people who do the work, many of us think we are just too good to do. Those people we barely notice but they help us live.
Right now we have an amazing opportunity. We have the opportunity to realize what we could all be missing out on and to figure out what is really important to us.
